In medicine, Sexual Addiction refers to a behaviour characterised by intense sexual drive or rather obsession with sex, as it was diagnosed of the golfer – Tiger Woods.
However, experts say that this is not limited to sexual acts only, but it also includes thoughts of sex that tend to dominate one’s mind, making it difficult to concentrate or even engage in healthy social relationships.
Studies have shown that people suffering from Sexual Addiction will usually give excuses for their behaviour, and perpetually deny that they have a problem.
They will often engage in risky behaviours that could lead to serious consequences, yet they do not seem to care. They will constantly harass people of the opposite sex through conversations, molestation, different forms of harassment, and so on. At times they may expose themselves in public – a condition known as Exhibitionism.
The main characteristics of sexual addiction include Multiple sexual partners, Self masturbation, Using prostitutes or prostituting, watching pornography, phone sex, Engaging in one-night stands, sexual harassments among several others.
Sexual Addiction is a recipe for contracting sexually transmitted infections including HIV/Aids, leads to unwanted pregnancies, breakages of marriages or even divorce, arrests, and the patient will always never get sexual fulfillment or emotional attachment to the person they engage with.
However, experts say that the disease is treatable through psychological coaching, under trained medical personnel. But in order to be treated, psychiatrists say that it has to begin with the patient. One must accept the he or she has a problem and is willing to undergo the therapy.

Joseph Hellon: Jazz maestro or criminal mastermind?
Submitted by alan mwendwa on Fri, 02/19/2010 - 12:02.What in the world could possibly drive a successful anchorperson, certified lawyer and loving daughter to quit her job, dump her fiancé and disown her family in the name of a church run by a jazz musician?
What hold could this musician-cum-pastor have on this person that would make them throw away everything they have in the name of salvation?
The Bible gives us a story of a rich man who came to Jesus and asked him for a way to get into the kingdom of God. Jesus told the man to go sell all his possessions and give the money to the poor and all his treasures will be in heaven.
Could this possibly be the case with Esther Arunga?
In a press conference held at Jacaranda Hotel in Westlands yesterday (18/02/2010), Joseph Hellon told the press that he would be running for the position of president of Kenya with Esther Arunga playing the role of his running mate. If we are to follow the teachings of the Bible stated above, wouldn’t this move be termed as a money seeking initiative?
Let’s take a look at the church behind the whole saga; the Finger of God. According to pastor Hellon, the Finger of God is an Apostolic church which follows the same principles as any other church; this includes baptism, holy communion and reading the Bible. Apostolic churches are a Pentecostal Christian denomination which traces its origins back to the early 1900s.
Their mission is to make known world-wide the forgiveness of sins through the atoning death of Christ; the baptism in water by immersion; the baptism of the Holy Spirit with signs following; the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit; the five gifts of our Ascended Lord; and the vision called in the New Testament, 'the Church which is His Body'.
So why would certain members of the Finger of God be cast out of the church for stating their displeasure at the introduction of musician Quincy Timberlake into the higher government levels of the church? Is it customary for followers to be condemned and thrown out of church?
Wouldn’t it be fitting then to say that the group’s beliefs and practices could be considered strange or sinister? And consequently, this actually happens to be the layman’s definition of a cult.
Most scholars steer away from the word ‘cult’ and prefer to use the term ‘new religious movements’ (or NRMs). But the main difference between cults and NRMs is the use of force to defend their ways in cults. Some scholars believe that NRMs practice some form of coercive persuasion to recruit and maintain members by suppressing their ability to reason, think critically, and make choices in their own best interest.
Doesn’t this sound very familiar when we look at recent events?
Studies performed have revealed that NRMs use a number of steps to effectively perform their coercive persuasion. They include:
· Putting people in physical or emotional distressing situations.
· Reducing their problems to one simple explanation, which is repeatedly emphasized.
· Providing unconditional love, acceptance and attention from a charismatic leader.
· Providing a new identity based on the group.
· Entrapment through isolation of friends, relative and the mainstream culture with access to information being severely controlled.
This writer’s conclusion is that Joseph Hellon, like the Transformers, has more to him than meets the eye. This charismatic, well dressed and eloquent jazz musician-cum-pastor could be running a legitimate business and leading a flock of faithful followers.
But it is more likely that he is an attention seeking conman who will stop at nothing to make a name for himself while making a lot of money in the process. It’s a pity that people like Esther Arunga have fallen prey to people like Hellon. And we can only hope that Esther doesn’t open a floodgate of blind followers faithful to a man of questionable character, morals and sanity.

TV Review: The Wedding Show
Submitted by Ritah Mutuku on Mon, 04/06/2009 - 14:30.The increased viewership in local programming has seen more sponsorship from advertisers translating to increased television revenues.
More talk, travel, business and art show have began grace our screens.
But the Wedding Show is perhaps in its own category. It airs on Sunday at 6:30pm on Citizen TV and highlights the so called ‘big moments’ of a couple’s wedding day. Each episode features two couples.
From the look of the show, a couple that would like to be featured during this half hour show has to write to the show’s producer for the Citizen crew to come cover their wedding day. If this is not the case, the couple will send a tape containing footage of their wedding day; wedding’s theme, execution, wedding service providers and wedding day style.
The show also has this part known as Snap Shot where a couple will send their photos, to be sampled and watched by viewers.
In my opinion, though the show has about four sponsors who groom the host (Noni Gathoni), one is left to wonder why people would want such memorable moments aired on national TV.
The Show could style up a bit by providing the viewers mainly the targeted audience with tips on how to choose for their wedding theme, execute their wedding, find reliable service providers and enjoy their day in style.
